Wonders of Karelia

Karelia is a region in the Russian Northwest. Its capital, the city of Petrozavodsk, is located nearly 400 km away from St.Petersburg and 300 km from the Russian-Finnish border. Among numerous cultural sights of the area Kizhi Island is the most famous. The unique ensemble of wooden churches, chapels and traditional houses is situated there. The region has vast areas covered with forests, tens thousand rivers and lakes, two National Parks and several Nature Reserves.

Day 1, St. Petersburg 

21:00 — pick up from hotel in St. Petersburg and transfer to railway station to take overnight train to Petrozavodsk.

Day 2, Petrozavodsk — Kizhi

Arrival to Petrozavodsk by morning train from St.Petersburg. Meet the guide at the train station. Transfer to cafe. Breakfast. City tour by car in Petrozavodsk. Lunch. Transfer to the port.

Departure for Kizhi by hydrofoil (1h 20min ride).

Sightseeing tour to the Kizhi Museum — Churches of the Transfiguration, Intercession, chapels and old wooden houses. Transfer by motor boat to a guest house in the village Patanevshina, accommodation (DBL room, WC and shower in the house).

Welcoming dinner. Russian sauna. Evening tea after the sauna. Overnight at the guesthouse.

Day 3, Kizhi — Petrozavodsk

Breakfast. Motorboat sightseeing tour "Kizhi Necklace" (chapels built in the 17th–19th centuries and traditional villages, situated on small islands around Kizhi and on the mainland.

Return to the guesthouse. Lunch (guest house).

Transfer to Kizhi. Departure by hydrofoil for Petrozavodsk. Arrival to Petrozavodsk. Transfer to the hotel, accommodation. Overnight at hotel.

Day 4, Petrozavodsk

Breakfast at the hotel. Check-out (luggage can be stored at the hotel cloak-room).

Countryside sightseeing tour by car or bus: the first Russian mineral-water health resort "Martial Waters", incl. the Church of Apostle Peter (1721, built according to the drawings of Tzar Peter the Great).

Continue to the Kivach Waterfalls and Nature Reserve, featuring typical taiga plants and then to the Church of the Assumption  (1774, very high and interesting wooden church by the lake shore) in the town of Kondopoga.
Return to Petrozavodsk; time at leisure.

Pick-up at the hotel, transfer to the restaurant of traditional Karelian cuisine "Karelskaya Gornitsa". Dinner. Transfer from the restaurant via the hotel (to pick the luggage) to the railway station for train to St. Petersburg.

Day 5, St. Petersburg

Transfer from railways station to airport / hotel / railways station.

End of services.
